Is there a time of year to use stink baits for catfish?

I've tried using it several times and several different types and brands, but never had luck. I'd love to catch more cat's but it seems like i only catch them while casting for b with crank baits or Rubber worms/lizards. I've also tried Cut bait and had some results. Also if you have any opinions on chumming for cat's please I'd love to hear it.
