What is four wheel drive?

AWD is a drive system in which the main drive wheels (Typically front) are pulling the car most of the time while the secondary drive wheels only engage if the primary wheels slip. 4wd uses a center differential to lock the front and rear axles so that one wheel on each is always pulling. That is why 4wd cannot be driven on dry pavement and awd can.
